Frequently Asked Questions

LEARNING TO PLAY THE GUITAR

Why learn to play the Guitar?

The guitar is the second most popular instrument to learn.

Nearly every song we know and love incorporates guitar in some way. It is a very portable instrument, making it easy to practice while out of town or on vacations, and has a mellow and pleasant sound even in the initial stages of learning.

The guitar is extremely versatile, with styles ranging from Classical and Flamingo, to Jazz, and Pop, and Rock. This means there are endless musical worlds to explore once you get the basics. While it is a serious solo instrument, it can also be great to accompany yourself while singing, or to play with bands and ensembles.

When Should my Child Start Guitar Lessons?

Generally around 6 or 7 years old. Although there are exceptions, the challenge of learning guitar for the very young is that pressing the strings down can quickly get tiring.

Certainly there are exceptions however, and it really depends on how focused and interested the child is. We usually recommend that kids try it for a couple months and see how it goes.

How long does it take to learn to play the Guitar?

You will often see results in a few months, however it’s hard to predict. It really depends on how consistent the student is with classes, and of course with daily practice.

We find that setting clear goals and also participating in recitals tend to boost progress.

Am I too old to take Guitar Lessons?

No. This is a question we frequently get from adult students. Over the years, we have trained hundreds of adult students, from college age, to students in their 90’s.

We train adults who are getting back to guitar after a long hiatus from lessons, as well as adults who are starting the instrument for the first time.

Our instructors really enjoy working with adults, and we even find some adults learn faster than children because they often have longer attention spans and great ability to understand the mechanics of the instrument.

LESSONS

How long of a lesson should I take?

For children 5 to 9 years old, a 45 minute musical lesson is sufficient. For studnets 9+ years and students who have specific musical goals such as playing in orchestra, a full 1 hour lesson is a better investment. For any advanced players a 1 hour lesson is highly recommended.

Do I need my own instrument?
We ask all students to have an instrument in their home, so they can practice during the week. Let us know if you need any recommendations!
Can we split a 60 minute lesson into two lessons?

If you have two students wanting to learn, we are able to divide a 60 minute lesson into two 30 minute lessons.

What happens if I leave for 2 months and come back?

If you are leaving for 30 days or longer, you have the option of holding your time and teacher for when you return by paying your normal monthly tuition. You may also withdraw completely and re- register when you return, however your time and teacher may not be available.

Do you accept the government’s Creative Kids Voucher?

Currently we are only accepting Creative Kids Voucher in NSW. We hope to accept the government voucher in other states soon.

Do I need to travel anywhere for my lessons?

We will come to your home, meaning you don’t have to fight traffic to get to after school lessons.

How can we access the MyMusicStaff student portal?

You can visit https://app.mymusicstaff.com/ to log into the student portal. Email us at musiclessons@customersupport.care to get your login details.

Is a 45 minute lesson too long for my child?

In our 45 minute lessons, we are able to cover music theory, technical skills alongside the songs we teach. These important aspects of musical education are often skipped over in 30 minute lessons.

How do I know my child is progressing ?

To keep our students learning and progressing, we use the Musical Ladder system. Every 3 months our students take a test with their teacher to make sure they are absorbing the material in the lessons and making progress. Our students love this system as they get to earn cool colourful wristbands and certificates as well as trophies for their achievements! Our teachers also will take the time to conference

LEARN GUITAR THE RIGHT WAY!

If you have been trying to learn the guitar on your own, you may be frustrated with your progress. If you are trying to gather information from many different sources, taking a little bit from one teacher and a little bit from another and attempting to piece it all together, you will probably find it difficult to stay focused and on track toward your goal.

The series is designed in a very structured and systematic way. Every aspect is taught in extensive detail and every section progresses from the previous one. You can spend as much time on each section as you need.

Start first with the Essential Theory and Technique course-

ESSENTIAL THEORY AND TECHNIQUE

The Essential Theory and Technique for Guitar course designed for two main types of people; the beginner guitar player who has no guitar or musical experience and those who can play guitar a little bit but are wanting to understand the music theory behind what they are playing and to improve on their technique.

Music Is A Language

Learning music is like learning a language. Music notes are like letters of the alphabet. When you learn how to combine them, you can create chords, which are like words, and with words you can create sentences and tell stories.

There are some great guitar players who don’t necessarily know all of the theory behind what they are playing, but using the above analogy of music as a language, imagine the potential that is being missed out on by not fully understanding what you are playing. If you were taking a trip to France, you could buy a translation book that could tell you how to say certain phrases in French, such as “Where is the bathroom?” or “What time is it?”, but imagine how much more you could communicate if you were able to construct your own sentences and phrases in French? You could say whatever you wanted without limits. Music is similar; by understanding the “why”, and practicing the “how” you reduce the limitations and open up a world of opportunity to express yourself with your instrument.

The topics you will learn in this course include;

Part 1: Parts of the Guitar

Part 2: The Musical Alphabet

Part 3: Notes on the Neck

Part 4: Neck Diagrams

Part 5: Holding the Guitar

Part 6: Holding the Pick

Part 7: Picking the Strings

Part 8: Left Hand Technique

Part 9: The Chromatic Scale

Part 10: The Spider Exercise

Part 11: The C-Major Scale

Part 12: What is a “Key?”

Part 13: Standard Notation

Part 14: How Chords Are Made

Part 15: Playing Chords on the Guitar

Part 16: Other Major Scales

Part 17: Other Major Scales on the Guitar

Part 18: The G-Major Chord

Follow up with the Kickstarter course, our most popular course, enjoyed by thousands of students!

KICKSTARTER: LEVEL ONE

The  Guitar Lessons course is designed to start at the beginner level and progress up to intermediate. This series not only teaches you “how” to play, but also focuses on the “why”. We won’t just tell you to “put your fingers here” to play this chord, we want you to really understand why certain notes work together, while others don’t. Because once you understand how scales work, and how chords are made, it will unlock the mystery of music theory and really open up the guitar neck so you can play beyond the basics.

Kickstarter Level One is over 2 and a half hours long and picks up right where the Essential Theory and Technique course left off.

Part 23: Putting It All Together

In Kickstarter Level 3, we really step it up and start looking at more advanced right hand picking, with string skipping and melodic arppegiated chords. This might sound complicated, but we break it down into its simplest form so you will be playing great sounding melodic playing in no time.

You will also learn inverted chords or “slash” chords such as D/F# or G/B. These are great sound chords that can give your music a real lift.

You will learn to play in different rhythmic feels and time signatures like 3/4 and 6/8, which create more of a swinging type feel.

You will learn the main Barre chord shapes, which can be used to play any barre chord in any key. These chords will really open up some new possibilities in your playing. How to transpose songs in to different keys to make them easier to play or easier to sing. How to use a capo, not only to change the key of a song, but to provide more chord options and variations.

This course is packed with information, but it is presented in a structured, and systematic way. **SEO Meta Title:** Group vs Private Music Lessons: Choose Best for Your Child | NZ **Red Flags: When to Reconsider Your Choice (continued)**

In group settings, watch for signs that your child is consistently behind or ahead of the group pace, feels lost in the crowd, or is becoming frustrated with the social dynamics. Some children who are naturally competitive might become discouraged if they’re not progressing as quickly as their peers, while others might lose motivation if the group moves too slowly for their abilities.

For private lessons, red flags include your child seeming intimidated by the one-on-one attention, lacking motivation without peer interaction, or expressing loneliness in their musical journey. Some children thrive on the energy that comes from learning alongside others and may feel isolated in private instruction.

Communication is Key

Regular check-ins with both your child and their instructor are essential. Ask open-ended questions about how lessons are going, what they’re enjoying most, and what feels challenging. Many issues can be addressed through communication before they become reasons to switch formats entirely.

Sometimes the issue isn’t the format but rather the specific instructor or class dynamics. A different teacher or a different group might resolve the problems without needing to change from group to private lessons or vice versa.

Success Stories from Both Formats

Throughout New Zealand, we see incredible success stories from both group and private lesson formats. Take Emma from Auckland, who started in group violin lessons at age 6. The social aspect kept her engaged during the challenging beginning stages, and she’s now principal violinist in her high school orchestra. The ensemble skills she developed from day one have been crucial to her success.

Then there’s Jake from Wellington, who struggled in group piano lessons because he needed more time to process new concepts. When he switched to private lessons, his confidence soared. The personalized pace and individual attention allowed him to develop into an accomplished pianist who now composes his own pieces and performs solo recitals.

The Hybrid Success Story

Perhaps most inspiring is Sarah from Christchurch, who experienced both formats throughout her musical journey. She started with group ukulele lessons for fun and social interaction, added private guitar lessons when she got serious about technique, and now leads a youth folk ensemble. Her combination of solid technical skills and natural ensemble abilities makes her a versatile and confident musician.

Special Considerations for New Zealand Families

Living in New Zealand presents unique opportunities and challenges for music education. Our diverse cultural landscape means children can be exposed to a wide range of musical traditions, from Māori waiata to contemporary indie rock. Both group and private lessons can incorporate this cultural richness, but they do so in different ways.

Group lessons naturally lend themselves to exploring cultural musical traditions because many of these traditions are inherently communal. Children can experience waiata, Pacific Islander music, and other cultural expressions as they were meant to be experienced – as group activities that build community and cultural connection.

Geographic Considerations

For families in smaller New Zealand communities, group lessons might provide access to quality music education that wouldn’t be economically viable in a private lesson format. Rural and small-town families often find that group lessons create a critical mass of students that makes specialized music instruction possible in their communities.

Conversely, in larger cities like Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch, the abundance of qualified private instructors might make individual lessons more accessible and affordable than in smaller communities.

Supporting Your Child’s Musical Journey

Regardless of whether you choose group or private lessons, your support as a parent remains the most crucial factor in your child’s musical success. This support looks different depending on the lesson format, but it’s equally important in both cases.

For group lessons, you might focus on helping your child prepare for group dynamics, encouraging them to support their classmates, and celebrating group achievements alongside individual progress. For private lessons, your support might involve helping create practice routines, attending recitals, and providing the encouragement that comes naturally from peers in group settings.

Creating Musical Community at Home

If your child is in private lessons, consider creating opportunities for them to share music with others – whether through family performances, joining school ensembles, or participating in community music groups. If they’re in group lessons, you might supplement with additional practice support or occasional private coaching for specific challenges.

Remember that music is ultimately a lifelong journey, and the format that works best might change as your child grows and develops. Stay flexible, maintain open communication, and focus on fostering a love of music that will last well beyond childhood lessons.

Looking Forward: The Future of Music Education

The landscape of music education continues to evolve, with technology creating new possibilities for both group and private instruction. Online platforms now allow for virtual group lessons that can connect students across geographic boundaries, while apps and digital tools enhance private instruction with interactive features and immediate feedback.

However, the fundamental benefits of both formats remain constant. Group lessons will always provide irreplaceable social interaction and ensemble skills, while private lessons will continue to offer unmatched individual attention and customized learning experiences.

Making Your Decision

As you stand at this crossroads, remember that there’s no universally “right” choice – only the right choice for your child at this moment in their musical journey. Consider their personality, learning style, current interests, and long-term goals. Think about your family’s practical constraints and preferences.

Most importantly, remember that this decision is not permanent. Many of the most successful musicians have experienced both group and private instruction at different stages of their development. The key is to start somewhere and remain open to adjusting course as needed.

Whether your child thrives in the collaborative energy of group lessons or flourishes with the focused attention of private instruction, what matters most is that they’re making music, developing skills, and building a relationship with music that will enrich their life for years to come.

Take that first step, stay engaged in your child’s musical journey, and watch as they discover the joy, discipline, and creativity that music education provides. The melody of their musical story is just beginning, and whether it starts in a group or private setting, it’s sure to be uniquely beautiful.

Fix Your Child’s Squeaky Clarinet | Expert Tips & Lessons

Is your child’s clarinet making strange squeaks and refusing to play the right notes?

Hey parents, if your little musician is struggling with their clarinet, the problem might not be their playing technique. Most clarinet issues come down to simple maintenance that takes just minutes a day.

First, make sure your child wipes down the inside of their clarinet after every practice session. Moisture buildup is the enemy of good sound. Second, check that reed regularly. A chipped or warped reed will make even the best player sound like a dying goose.

At Music Lessons Academy dot co dot nz, our instructors teach proper instrument care during every lesson. We come right to your home for convenient one on one clarinet lessons that include these essential maintenance skills.

Remember, a well maintained clarinet means better sound, fewer repairs, and a happier young musician. Visit Music Lessons Academy dot co dot nz to book your child’s first lesson.
